The last time Bayern Munich and Olympique Lyonnais met in the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League was in 2009-10, the German side came away a 4-0 winner on aggregate.
Ten years on, the teams will square off again under much different circumstances. COVID-19 has forced a massive change in the format of the knockout stages, with the quarterfinals and semis now consisting of single-elimimation matches rather than two-legged fixtures. In addition, the matches are all taking place behind closed doors in Lisbon, Portugal, taking away any home-field advantage that would've been enjoyed by the teams.
Regardless of the changes, what remains the same is that Bayern is the overwhelming favourite. The reigning Bundesliga champion has been on fire since European leagues restarted earlier in the summer, culminating in last weekend's 8-2 demolition of Barcelona to secure the semifinal berth. Die Roten have been arguably the best team in the world over the past few months, and they head into Wednesday's match full of confidence that they can continue their torrid form.
On the other side of the pitch is Lyon, which struggled throughout its pandemic-shortened Ligue 1 campaign. Les Gones finished seventh in their domestic league, keeping them out of the 2020-21 UCL qualification zone.
However, while Lyon has struggled domestically, it has consistently pulled off the unthinkable in the Champions League. Perhaps motivated by the fact that its only path into next season's UCL is by winning the current tournament, Lyon has become something of a giant killer in the knockouts. After dispatching of Juventus in the Round of 16, Lyon stunned Manchester City with a pair of late goals in the quarterfinals to book its place in Wednesday's semifinal.
Now, facing down perhaps the toughest of its opponents so far and with a spot in the final on the line, Lyon will look to play giant-killer once again.
