Manchester City was expected to advance out of the Champions League round of 16 with ease, and that's exactly what happened.
After defeating Borussia Monchengladbach 2-0 in the first leg on Feb. 24, the Sky Blues completed the task with a professional 2-0 win over the German side at home on Tuesday. The 4-0 aggregate sees City through to the quarterfinals for the fourth straight season.
While Tuesday's result was seemingly a foregone conclusion, that doesn't mean there wasn't entertainment value to be found. In particular, Kevin De Bruyne's 12th-minute long-range bomb to open the scoring was the type of scintillating precision that keeps fans' attention.
The 29-year-old received a pass just outside the Gladbach 18-yard box and unleashed a wicked first-time strike that didn't stop rising until it hit the underside of the post and nestled into the back of the net.
De Bruyne's goal effectively ended Gladbach's chances, but City drove a further nail in the coffin with Ilkay Gundogan's goal in the 18th minute.
City now moves on to the quarterfinals, which is where the team's journey ended in each of the last three seasons.
