For the first time since the foundation of the Premier League, Liverpool will take the field as champions on Thursday. And, when they do take the field, they'll be given a guard of honour by their biggest title rivals.
Liverpool's first match as Premier League champions will come against Manchester City at the Etihad as the Reds' initial stop on their celebration tour comes against the team that narrowly edged them for the title last season. It was Manchester City's loss to Chelsea last week that sealed Liverpool's championship, and after several days of celebration on Merseyside, Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool will now begin their seven-game victory march through the rest of the Premier League season.
However, if Klopp has shown anything in recent years, it's that he can motivate his side to push further, and Liverpool have a reason to continue on. The Reds can still break a number of Premier League records this season, including a few held by Thursday's opponent.
Liverpool are four wins away from tying Manchester City's record of 32 victories, the most in a season, and securing 14 of the 21 available points remaining would see Liverpool level Manchester City's centurions for the highest-ever point total in a season. Manchester City's 2017-19 title-winning margin of 19 points is also in danger, with Liverpool holding a 23-point lead heading into Thursday's clash.
And that says nothing of the records already broken by Liverpool this season. Klopp's side sealed the earliest title win with Chelsea's triumph on Thursday, locking up the league two games quicker than when Manchester United and Manchester City triumphed with five games remaining in 2000-01 and 2017-18, respectively.
Liverpool topped Manchester City in their other meeting this season, topping their title rivals 3-1 at Anfield in November. It was on that day that Liverpool solidified their status as title favorites, and they haven't looked back since as the Reds have dropped just seven points all season.
Manchester City, meanwhile, have had an up-and-down restart by Pep Guardiola's standards. Last year's champions have a stranglehold on second place, sitting eight points above Leicester, although the potential for a Champions League ban still looms large.
City have already bounced back from their loss to Chelsea, cruising past Newcastle 2-0 in the FA Cup quarterfinals to book their spot in the final four.
