Manchester City continue their years-long quest for the Champions League title when they host Bayern Munich on Tuesday for the first leg of their 2022-23 quarter-final tie.
The Sky Blues are now perennial participants in the knockout stages of the competition, but winning actual silverware in the tournament has eluded them thus far. They now come up against Bayern, a club formerly managed by current City boss Pep Guardiola, and one that has knocked out a number of heavyweight hopefuls in recent years.
The German side will once again present a formidable challenge, one that Guardiola reiterated in his pre-match comments this week.
While City are in it to win the whole thing, the manager knows it will take a monumental effort by his side to get past the likes of the current Bundesliga leaders.
“It's an honour to be here against an elite club like Bayern Munich. I am happy to be here," Guardiola said.
"It's not for granted. You have to deserve it. You have to play good and try to do the first tomorrow.
"We tried last season. We tried two seasons ago. We tried three seasons ago. Every single season. But there are teams that you face that are also good, too. They want to win it too.
"My ambition is to be here again, that’s my dream, to live it again and be here in a Champions League competition.
“We want to try like we try all the time but it doesn’t mean we win."
