When Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund meet on Wednesday for their Group G match in the 2022-23 UEFA Champions League, there will be a familiar feeling between the two sides.
Not because they're frequent foes, though — they've only ever faced off in two previous UCL campaigns, the most recent coming in 2020-21. No, the reason there's a familiarity between the sides is because of the amount of player movement between the clubs.
In addition to Ilkay Gundogan, who left Dortmund for City back in 2016, there are numerous links between the teams. Erling Haaland is the most notable player to have left the German side for the Sky Blues this summer, but Manuel Akanji and Sergio Gomez also made recent moves to Manchester after playing for the Yellow Submarine.
Haaland, Akanji and Gomez all started for City in their 4-0 victory at Sevilla on Matchday 1, with Gundogan coming off the bench, so it's reasonable to expect a heavy contingent of former Dortmund players sporting Sky Blue jerseys on the pitch on Wednesday.
For City manager Pep Guardiola, that familiarity may come in handy, as any advantage against the team most likely to challenge them for top spot in the group will be welcomed.
“Players know about football. They know what they are looking for. They can have specifics about a player because they know them better than me," Guardiola said.
“When you are in the locker room or on the pitch, they were there for years, they know far more than me.
“I can watch a thousand video tapes but they know more.
“The formation maybe isn’t as important as how is the manager or how they felt they played against us a few seasons ago.”
