A pair of late goals from Moussa Dembele sealed the unlikely result, a 3-1 win for Lyon.

The drama of the 2019-20 UEFA Champions League quarterfinals continued on Saturday as Lyon stunned Manchester City 3-1 to eliminate the Premier League giant.

Substitute Moussa Dembele had a near instant impact as he scored twice in an eight-minute span to seal the match. Prior to Dembele's entrance, it appeared as though City was in control after the Sky Blues fought back from a one-goal deficit to claim a 69th-minute equalizer through Kevin de Bruyne. However, the game turned on its head minutes after Dembele was subbed in, with the big striker scoring on a breakaway and then pouncing on a fatal goalkeeping error by City netminder Ederson.

The result was no less than the scrappy French side deserved as it gladly ceded possession to City from the outset, instead aiming for incisive counterattacks to find success. That's exactly what happened with the opening goal as Maxwel Cornet found the back of the net from well out in the 24th minute.

City wasn't able to create many clear-cut chances despite stretches of dominance to end the first half and through much of the second, allowing Lyon to remain organized. Ultimately, City's lack of cutting edge kept the usually high-scoring team off the scoresheet enough for Lyon to take advantage.

4:54 p.m. - That's it! Lyon completes the upset and heads to the UCL semifinals!

4:52 p.m. - De Bruyne forces a good stop from Lopes with a well-struck free kick. Lyon doesn't look like it's going to allow anything else today.

4:49 p.m. - Five added minutes start now.

4:45 p.m. - ⚽️ GOAL LYON! Dembele puts the game on ice after a poor bit of goalkeeping by Ederson. The City goalie alows a huge rebound, and the Lyon man easily converts. Lyon 3, City 1.

4:44 p.m. - HOW DID HE MISS? Sterling has the easiest of tap-ins after Jesus did incredible work to cut through the Lyon defence and set up his teammate, but somehow the ball goes over the bar!

4:40 p.m. - How does City respond? The English club has been the better side in the second half, but that goal gives Lyon added motivation to scrap over the final 7+ minutes.

4:37 p.m. - ⚽️ GOAL LYON! Dembele gets in alone on goal after a City defender slips, and the substitute is on target. Ederson got a lot of that ball, but it still nestles into the back of the net. Lyon 2, City 1.

4:33 p.m.- 🔁 Double substitution for Lyon as Dembele and Tete enter the match. Depay and Dubois head to the bench.

4:30 p.m. -  CHANCE! Jesus turns his defender inside out before unleashing a rocket that Lopes has to dive quickly to the near post to stop. City's on the hunt for the go-ahead goal.

4:29 p.m. - 20 minutes to go.

4:28 p.m. - 🔁 Lyon brings in Thiago Mendes in place of Guimaraes.

4:23 p.m. - ... De Bruyne's curling effort is about a yard too high.

4:22 p.m. - 🟡 Lyon's Marcelo gets his studs into Jesus' right knee and he's rightly shown yellow. De Bruyne lines up for the free kick from 20 yards ...

4:19 p.m. - City coming closer and closer now. Lyon may not be able to hang on for another half-hour if things stay the same way.

4:18 p.m. - Save by Lopes after a well-struck De Bruyne free kick. The Lyon 'keeper elects to punch it but he probably could have caught the ball. It didn't make a difference in the end as Lyon cleared the danger in short order.

4:15 p.m. - 🟡 Rodri gets cautioned as he clips Guimaraes from behind.

4:14 p.m.- 🔁 Fernandinho makes way for Mahrez as City shifts its formation in search of a breakthrough.

4:09 p.m. - Not much going on here so far, which will suit Lyon just fine.

4:03 p.m. - The second half begins, and we should expect City to pile on the pressure in search of an equalizer.

First half

3:47 p.m. - And that's the half! It's an unlikely score line but Lyon opened the match positively and deserves the lead. Lyon 1, City 0.

3:46 p.m. - CLOSE! De Bruyne drops a sumptuous ball in — using the outside of his foot! — that drops for Sterling, but Lopes does well to get across and stop the near-angle shot. City's definitely come into the game more in the closing stages of the half.

3:42 p.m. - Sterling finds more success on the right wing and gets a good pass into Rodri, but the shot from in close was scuffed and easy for Lopes to collect.

3:38 p.m. - A good battle is brewing on the flank between Sterling and Denayer. As usual, City looks to create a lot through Sterling, so the Lyon defender being up to the task thus far is a boon for the French side.

3:31 p.m. - SAVE! Lopes does well to stop a Gundogan chance from in close. The rare City attack nearly worked, reiterating the side's talent level even when things aren't clicking.

3:29 p.m. - 🟡 Fernandinho goes into the book after upending Aouar while the Lyon mid was in the pulling away with the ball. City's very much out of sorts and second-best so far today.

3:24 p.m. - ⚽️ GOAL LYON! Cornet jumps on the loose ball and hammers into the net from 25 yards out. It was quite a finish as he had very little of the goal to aim for. This will add some life to the match! Lyon 1, City 0.

3:16 p.m. - The game plan for Lyon seems obvious by now: allow City to control play but hit quickly on the counter.

3:12 p.m. - 🟡 Dubois gets the game's first yellow card for a hard challenge on Cancelo.

3:11 p.m. - 11 minutes in an City has over 75% of the possession. Not surprising, of course, but also not indicative of how the match has gone thus far.

3:09 p.m. - Lyon gets a long-range shot on goal after a corner kick. That was a well-hit strike but easily taken by Ederson.

3:05 p.m. - Wow! Walker goes to chest the ball back to his goalkeeper, but it wasn't cushioned properly and pings off the City defender quicker than expected. That was nearly a bizarre own-goal.

3:03 p.m. - Sterling gets into the 6-yard box and tries to slide it over to Jesus, but his pass is intercepted. City's attacking from the jump, as expected.

3:00 p.m. - Here we go!
