Manchester United vs. Chelsea on Thursday won't be for any silverware, but the teams will still be taking the match as seriously as a cup final.
Both sides are well outside of the title race, with sixth-place United fighting to keep their European ambitions alive, but that doesn't mean the teams won't be able to find motivation when they square off at Old Trafford.
"We would love to be, and Manchester United would love to be, in a title decider but unfortunately there are two other teams in red and blue who have a word to say and over the last years made their point strongly," Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel said. "So we have to accept it and we have to do everything to try to close the gap, and Man United do as well."
While Chelsea seem destined to finish third when the season draws to a close last month, there's still an outside possibility of the team being leapfrogged by London rivals Arsenal or Tottenham, especially if the Blues' middling form from the last few weeks continues throughout the run-in. That's why getting a victory against a United club filled with experience and star power is of top priority for Tuchel.
"We don’t reflect so much on their situation and what’s going on in and around the club," he said. "We focus on their last matches, we should not get confused by the lack of points, lack of results. For me their squad is full of quality and we need to take care of it on the pitch."
