With most teams within two or three games of reaching the end of their MLS regular-season schedules, there are still a number of playoff spots available.
This is especially true in the Eastern Conference, where only two teams have booked their postseason tickets so far. That leaves five berths still to be decided between nine teams, many of whom will face one another this week.
Among the massive matches in the East this week is Saturday's meeting between the New York Red Bulls and CF Montreal. The teams head into the weekend tied on 43 points, with both sides just below the playoff line. Thus, a win for either side would serve as a huge boost to the victor's postseason hopes while also denying points from a fellow playoff "bubble" team.
Meanwhile, the playoff picture is slightly more settled in the West as three teams have already cemented their participation in the postseason. Four more clubs will eventually get in, but six are still mathematically alive. Only five points separate the six teams, so this weekend's slate of games will have huge implications for the West's playoff bracket.
Perhaps the biggest of the West games comes Wednesday, Nov. 3, when the Portland Timbers visit Real Salt Lake. Four points separate the Timbers and RSL prior to the weekend's action, but the Utahns also play on Saturday and could be trailing their hosts by just a single point by the time their midweek meeting happens.
