The final full weekend of MLS action prior to the June international break is here.
Many of the league's teams are coming off midweek games as they participated in the U.S. Open Cup or Canadian Championship. That means some rotation could be in order, depending on how many of their respective regulars each side used in cup play.
While some teams will undoubtedly have selection headaches, none will be spread more thin than the Vancouver Whitecaps. A presumed COVID outbreak ran through the club over the past week or so, forcing several players into health and safety protocols. Nowhere was this felt harder than in net, where the entire goalkeeping pool was eliminated from selection last weekend, forcing the club to call up 17-year-old academy prospect Max Anchor to make his pro debut in front of 32,000 fans in Charlotte while CPL emergency loanee Niko Giantsopolous flew across the continent to sit on the bench and make up the numbers.
Add in injuries and suspensions, and the Whitecaps did well to leave North Carolina with just a one-goal loss. The team then traveled to Calgary to take on CPL side Cavalry FC in the Canadian Championship on Wednesday and must now bring their depleted lineup to Kansas for a Saturday evening match-up against Sporting KC.
While not the first team in history that has had to deal with a large number of concurrent absences, it feels like this particular stretch of adversity could be a season-defining event for the Whitecaps.
