August arrives with a truncated mid-week set of matches in Major League Soccer.
With the playoff race firmly underway, the six games scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday will have ripple effects across all 28 teams in the league. All 12 active sides are involved in the postseason picture, with some more firmly entrenched than others.
A pair of the mid-week games feature teams all on the wrong side of the playoff line. First up is Charlotte FC vs. D.C. United, who stand 10th and 14th in the Eastern Conference, respectively. Wayne Rooney's D.C. are coming off a dramatic comeback victory in the Englishman's MLS managerial debut, as United scored twice in stoppage time to defeat Orlando City 2-1.
D.C. will look to keep that momentum going against a Charlotte side that saw their weekend match against Columbus Crew suspended due to dangerous weather.
Later Wednesday, the San Jose Earthquakes host Inter Miami in another meeting of teams in desperate need of a win. The 'Quakes (13th in the West) had the weekend off, but Miami (11th in the East) played to a wild 4-4 draw against Cincinnati on Saturday in which Gonzalo Higuain scored a hat-trick.
Miami boss Phil Neville hopes that Higuain, who had been underwhelming in his time in MLS prior to Saturday, will have finally found his stride at a crucial time of the campaign.
