A wild match was won by the underdogs.

The Czech Republic stunned the Netherlands 2-0 in the Euro 2020 round of 16 on Sunday.

A third-place qualifier into the knockout rounds, the Czechs were decided underdogs heading into the match, played in front of a raucous crowd in Budapest. The Dutch have struggled against the Czech Republic in recent meetings, and Sunday's result extended their misery as the Oranje were eliminated at the first hurdle of the knockouts.

It was actually the Netherlands who looked the better side in the first half, although the Czechs showed throughout the opening 45 minutes that they would not be intimidated by their glamourous opposition. It remained scoreless through halftime, but there was a real sense that the match was ready to come to life at a moment's notice.

And so it did in the second half, where fans saw a red card to Mattias De Ligt, a failed breakaway attempt by Donyell Malen, and two goals by the Czechs. Tomas Holes got his side on the scoreboard with a powerful header in the 68th minute, and then it was Patrick Schick with the dagger 10 minutes before fulltime as the fearless Czechs stood tall against the Netherlands and booked their spot in the quarterfinals.
