Next Chelsea manager: Who is in the running?

Next Chelsea manager: Who is in the running?DAZN

It's been less than a month since the 2022/23 Premier League season got underway and already there has been a high-profile managerial sacking.

Thomas Tuchel is no longer the manager of Chelsea after his 21-month tenure was brought to an end by the club's owners following a 1-0 loss to Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday night in their opening UEFA Champions League group game.

Already a list of candidates is being drawn up as to who could fill the managerial void at Stamford Bridge and there are some big names being linked with the vacancy.

Graham Potter

Brighton & Hove Albion manager Graham Potter has emerged as an early favourite for the Chelsea job.

After arriving on the South Coast in May 2019, Potter has made the Seagulls a mainstay in England's top flight and already exceeding expectations at the early stages of this current season with Brighton sitting fourth in the table.

While Potter's work at Brighton is being admired by football fans and pundits across the country, there are doubts as to whether he would be a big enough name in the eyes of Chelsea's owners to take charge of one of the most expensive squads in world football.

Mauricio Pochettino

Could Mauricio Pochettino be in line for a return to London footballing institution?

The Argentine has been out of work since July after parting ways with French giants Paris Saint-Germain and is often a name linked with some of the biggest clubs in world football.

Pochettino made his name as a reputable manager during his five years with Tottenham Hotspur, working with what was a relatively small budget for what the club wanted to achieve and also was the mastermind behind Spurs' first ever run to a UEFA Champions League final during the 2018/19 season.

If Chelsea do decide to employ Pochettinto, it will be interesting to see the reaction of Spurs fans who have an intense rivalry with the two-time European champions.

Zinedine Zidane

Zinedine Zidane is a one of those 'big' names which would interest the owners of Chelsea.

Following a decorated career as a player, Zidane has enjoyed huge success during his two managerial stints with Real Madrid, winning two La Liga titles and three UEFA Champions League titles.

These feats were achieved with having Cristiano Ronaldo in the iconic white shirt, but if Zidane decides to make the move to Stamford Bridge, there is no doubt that man with his stature could attract some of biggest and best players in world football to West London.

Brendan Rodgers

Brendan Rodgers is another British coach who has been linked with the Chelsea managerial vacancy.

After doing an impressive job at Leicester City over the past few seasons, there seems to be some frustration expressed from Rodgers when it came to business in the Summer transfer window and it has left the Foxes bottom of the Premier League table.

Just like Potter, Rodgers is not a name which would struggle to excite the Chelsea owners in terms of commercial value, but he does know how the club operates after spending four years in Chelsea's academy where he was head youth coach and reserve team manager.

Diego Simeone

Diego Simeone is name which has always been linked with the Premier League.

Whenver managerial vacancies have arisen in recent years at Arsenal and Manchester United, Simeone is a name which is always mentioned and it's no surprise that he could now make the switch to Stamford Bridge.

Simeone has a distinct style, albeit not the most glamorous, but it is one which brings success. Since becoming Atletico Madrid in December 2011, he has won two La Liga titles, two UEFA Europa Leagues, a Copa Del Rey and taken the club to two UEFA Champions League finals.

If Simeone does become the new Chelsea manager, his style of play may frustrate some fans, but it will be entertaining both on and off the pitch with the 52-year-old being an energetic presence on the touchline.
