Unlikely rivals Panama and Qatar face off in a 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup quarter-final.

The teams meet Saturday in Texas as the first part of a doubleheader that also features Mexico vs. Costa Rica. Panama topped Group C after going undefeated through their three group stage matches, while Qatar finished second in Group B despite defeating group winners Mexico on the final matchday.

The Qataris have had a year to forget after hosting the World Cup in November and December, with just three wins in nine matches since the start of 2023. However, a victory would put them one step away from reaching a final, which would go a long way towards salvaging a lost year.

As for Panama, they've lost just three of their nine games in 2023 thus far, although two of them have come against teams still alive in this Gold Cup (Mexico and Canada). The Canaleros are looking to re-establish themselves as a regional power after missing out on the World Cup, and ousting the lone non-Concacaf team from the competition would help in that regard.
