Patrik Berger believes Xabi Alonso will manage Liverpool - just not next season.
Liverpool are on the hunt to replace Jurgen Klopp with the German in his last campaign at Anfield.
Alonso looks set to claim Bayer Leverkusen’s first Bundesliga title as they run away with the league, and had been linked as the logical choice to replace Klopp.
However, he has committed to Leverkusen for next season, which means Liverpool need to look elsewhere.
Berger thinks that three other names are in the mix.
Speaking to BoyleSports about the latest Premier League odds, he said: "The media can create narratives that actually sometimes don't exist; I read the news and always wait for an individual to confirm or deny rumours before putting any substance behind them. Don't get me wrong, I liked the rumour that Xabi Alonso was going to be the next Liverpool manager.
"He played for the club, he knows the city, he knows the fans and he has done an amazing job at Leverkusen, so I was really impressed with him and I thought he could be the right choice. But I was surprised that he said he was going to stay, even though it is understandable because Leverkusen gave him the opportunity to start as a manager in the Bundesliga.
"He's still so young and he might think that the Liverpool job is too early. He might think he needs more experience or more games, but I have no doubt that one day he will be managing Liverpool.
"There are three names that I have seen linked, who I believe are worthy candidates; Ruben Amorim would be a great choice for what he has done at Sporting Lisbon with such a young team.
"Roberto De Zerbi was mentioned and Julian Nagelsmann as well. We could talk for hours, but we just have no idea where it is going to go."
