FC Porto enter their final match of the Champions League group stage in a bad mood.
The Dragons took an early lead against Santa Clara in a Liga Portugal match on Sunday and squandered the potential victory by allowing their opponents to equalize late in the contest. Chasing Benfica and Braga at the top of the table, Porto were in no position to drop two crucial points, and they blamed no one but themselves for the let down.
“We started well and scored early, but we could have sealed the match earlier," Porto defender Fabio Cardoso said. "We let Santa Clara believe, without taking away their merit, but there was a lot of passiveness from us. It wasn’t our best match, especially in terms of attitude. Now we have to think about the next match so we can get back to winning as soon as possible.”
The next match for Porto is Tuesday's Matchday 6 encounter with visiting Atletico Madrid, who were knocked out of the Champions League last week. The Portuguese side clinched their round of 16 berth on the same day, but a victory on Tuesday could see Porto claim top spot in Group B over Club Brugge.
The best way to get over a loss is with a win in the next match, and while Cardoso's comments came in the wake of a domestic defeat, they ring true ahead of Porto's midweek European foray.
"It’s always an issue when you don’t win because we always want to win," he said. "We will work to give a good response in the next match.”
