The teams both moved on to the last-16.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a pair of goals from the penalty spot and Karim Benzema also converted a spot-kick and scored from the run of play as Portugal and France drew 2-2 on the final day of group-stage play at Euro 2020.

It was a topsy-turvy 90 minutes in Budapest for the two sides, who each needed a result to ensure their advancement into the round of 16. The Portuguese broke the deadlock after France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris was judged to have fouled Danilo Pereira in the penalty area, leading to Ronaldo's first successful spot-kick of the game at the half-hour mark.

Fifteen minutes later, just as it looked as though Portugal would make it to the halftime break with the lead, the French were given a penalty for a handball infraction. Benzema then stepped up and followed his former Real Madrid teammate in confidently slotting the penalty kick home.

The French then jumped ahead just three minutes into the second half, with Benzema once again finding the back of the net. This time it was from the run of play, as Paul Pogba found the striker with a well-placed pass that Benzema placed behind onrushing Portugal 'keeper Rui Patricio.

France's newfound lead would last long, however, as Portugal was awarded another penalty kick at the hour mark. Ronaldo once again converted from 12 yards out, tying the game and giving both teams what they needed to move on. It seemed as though both sides were satisified with the result as it stood, with neither team looking particularly dangerous over the final 30 minutes of the match.

In the end, Portugal and France each claimed a point for the draw. For the French, the single point was good enough to win the group, while the Portuguese finished in third place.
