Heading into the penultimate weekend of October, Everton still leads the Premier League.
The Toffees finally dropped points last week, drawing cross-town rival Liverpool in a match that saw Virgil van Dijk go down with an ACL injury that may keep the Reds' stalwart defender out for the rest of the season. How that affects Liverpool going forward remains to be seen, but Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford will not suffer any punishment for the tackle that led to van Dijk's injury.
Everton may actually cede top spot in the standings before it takes the field on Matchday 6, as second-place Aston Villa hosts Leeds United in a Friday match with a lot more on the line than the schedule-makers could have foreseen. Villa sits just a point beind Everton (with a game in hand), so a victory would leapfrog the club into pole position — at least temporarily.
Saturday brings a flurry of matches as usual, with the standout being Manchester United vs. Chelsea. The two clubs are struggling to live up to their Premier League superpower status thus far in the campaign, despite considerable money spent over the transfer window. While both managers have come under fire for their teams' underachievement, one has to believe that United coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's seat is a bit warmer at this juncture than that of Chelsea boss Frank Lampard.
The marquee match for Sunday is Arsenal vs. Leicester. The teams are tied for fourth place and have shown flashes of potential through an inconsistent start to the campaign.
