Tim Sherwood won the Premier League as a Blackburn Rovers player.

Former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood believes that Jordan Henderson was a better captain for Liverpool than Steven Gerrard.

While Liverpool enjoyed some brilliant moments under Gerrard’s captaincy - including a famous comeback win against AC Milan in the 2005 Champions League final - it was with Henderson that they finally secured a Premier League title, as well as enjoying European success with Jurgen Klopp.

Speaking to William Hill, Sherwood discussed the best-ever Liverpool XI made from Anfield’s players past and present during the Premier League era, he suggested that Gerrard could not match Henderson as captain.

He said: “If I were to give you my best Liverpool Premier League side of all time, I’d have to start by putting Alisson in goal. I’d put Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back, he’s home grown, and he’s been through it, his range of passing is exceptional and he’s a Liverpool fan so he’s got that drive – I can’t think of anyone else to put there over him.

“Virgil van Dijk has to be in there and alongside him I’d put in Sami Hyypiä. My left-back has to be Andy Robertson!

“Moving onto midfield, Steven Gerrard has to be in there, and I know my next player will cause a bit of a stir but I’ve got my reasons – Jordan Henderson. For me, Henderson is the greatest captain Liverpool have had in the Premier League era.

“I think he was a better captain than Steven Gerrard because Henderson won the Premier League and the Champions League. Obviously Stevie was brilliant and they won the Champions League with him too.

“From a captain’s perspective, Henderson gives you more than what you see on the pitch and, Stevie might’ve done that as well, but Jordan is a manager’s dream. He’ll stick his team in line and push them in the right direction in terms of how to play for Liverpool and what the demands are from the manager. The third player I’d put in midfield with Gerrard and Henderson would be John Barnes. He settled in so quickly there and I was with him last week and he talks as if he’s a Scouser – that club gave him everything!”
