It's a battle of the behemoths as Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid meet on Tuesday in the first leg of their 2021-22 UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie.
The teams each top their respective domestic leagues, and now they'll look to translate that local dominance to the continental stage.
"There are no favourites," PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino said. "It could be a Champions League final given the quality of both sides. Paris Saint-Germain are hoping to win this title and are one of the contenders for it. The club strengthened in the summer in order to get closer to that dream, and I have full faith in my team and in our fans. We're at the same level as them in this tie."
Historically the teams couldn't be further apart in this competition. Madrid's got the most Champions League crowns of any team, while PSG's still on the look out for title No. 1. The past matters little today, of course, and Pochettino hopes that his side's torrid form in Ligue 1 will be an advantage against a Madrid side with just two wins in the past five La Liga matches.
"You always need to respect Real Madrid," he said. "They have incredible strength, which means that they always put things right when it matters. They've had some tough times domestically but some great times in the Champions League without necessarily playing all that well. They just had that unity and that desire to fight together. Playing well is nice, but it's good to have that strength."
