Another day, another first-time match-up in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals.
RB Leipzig and Atletico Madrid will square off in their maiden meeting on Thursday, and like the previous day's Atalanta-PSG fixture, it will be a knockout round veteran taking on a relative upstart.
Atletico is a perennial fixture in the quarterfinals, having reached that stage (or further) five times over the past seven seasons. Los Rojiblancos are as sure-fire a bet to advance to the latter stages as any other club in the world, but they've still not achieved the ultimate glory in raising the Champions League trophy.
On the other side of the field is Leipzig, the newest power in the Bundesliga and a debutant in the knockout stages. The Red Bulls are a relative new money team on the world stage, but consecutive third-place finishes in Germany's top tier and an ambition to establish themselves alongside the powerhouses in the Bundesliga and beyond have made Julian Nagelsmann's squad one to be reckoned with.
The absence of Timo Werner, Leipzig's former prolific striker who has since departed for Chelsea, will be a massive obstacle for Nagelsmann as the club scrambles to replace the 24-year-old's 34 goals in 45 games this season (in all competitions). Look for two of Yussuf Poulsen, Marcel Sabitzer and Patrik Schick to make up the forward line against Atletico, but whether they can replicate Werner's efficiency in front of goal against an elite opponent remains to be seen.
