That gave the Red Bulls three wins in their past five league matches, putting them fifth in the Bundesliga but just four points back of leaders Bayern Munich in a tight title race.
The visitors are also embroiled in a close domestic title race, as City trail Premier League-leading Arsenal by just two points. The Sky Blues actually held the top spot heading into the weekend but a 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest allowed Arsenal to re-take sole possession of first place with their win over Aston Villa.
Despite the disappointing result, City are still in good form and will give their hosts a proper test in the first leg before the teams reconvene in Manchester next month.
