That's the scenario facing both RB Leipzig and Manchester United as they face off on the final day of group stage play in the 2020-21 Champions League. The teams are tied with PSG on nine points, creating a three-way logjam atop Group H with only two spots on offer for the round of 16. With the Parisians heavily favoured to win their match against Istanbul Basaksehir, the pressure is on Leipzig and United to maximize their output and assure themselves of a berth in the next round.
United easily handled the German side the last time these teams met — the Matchday 2 encounter ended 5-0 in favour of the Red Devils — but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be without two of his best attackers on Tuesday as Anthony Martial and Edinson Cavani have been left at home due to inury concerns. The goal scoring duties will likely fall to Champions League Golden Boot contender Marcus Rashford, who netted a hat-trick in that Matchday 2 victory.
The Red Devils' 5-0 win from earlier in the group stage gives the Premier League side the tiebreaker should Tuesday's match end in a draw, meaning that a deadlock would be enough for United to advance. The United players aren't taking any chances, though.
"We want to win the game," United defender Harry Maguire said on Monday while noting that the team still has enough star power to pull through despite Cavani's and Martial's absences. "We're not going to sit back. We look to win every game we play. Your big players step up in the most pressured games.
"It's a bit similar to the game at Leicester last year where we had to get a result to reach the Champions League and we managed to do that, so we'll take confidence from that. But we feel ready, we feel prepared and we're looking forward to it."
