Familiar foes square off as Real Madrid host Chelsea on Wednesday for the first leg of their 2022-23 UEFA Champions League quarter-final tie.
The teams have met in the knockout stages the last two years, with each side claiming an aggregate victory before going on to win the tournament (Chelsea in 2020-21 and Madrid in 2021-22). Now they meet again in the quarter-finals of the 2022-23 competition, and while there's no guarantee the winner will eventually become the champion again this year, the recent history between the sides provides an extra bit of motivation.
"It seems like we have played them every year I have been here so it is a big team, we are excited, have beaten them in the past and are ready for the challenge," Chelsea midfielder Christian Pulisic said.
‘[Last year's meetings] could have gone either way for sure. We want some payback and hopefully beat them. You have to beat some good teams if you want to win the Champions League so we are ready for it. We are a confident team, we know we have good enough players to do some damage in this competition."
