He sees one ideal candidate.

Former Leicester City midfielder Robbie Savage sees Kieran McKenna as the best replacement for Erik ten Hag at Manchester United.

Ten Hag guided United to the FA Cup at the weekend with a rousing 2-1 win over Manchester City at Wembley, but it does not cover up the fact the club finished eighth in the league.

United’s form was hugely inconsistent in the Premier League and they failed to impress in the Champions League, where they were knocked out in the group stages.

There is speculation that Ten Hag will be sacked in the near future as the FA Cup result was reportedly deemed irrelevant ahead of the tie.

McKenna, a former United coach, has impressed at Ipswich Town after guiding them into the Premier League with automatic promotion, and he is linked to vacancies at Stamford Bridge, Brighton and potentially at Old Trafford.

Savage backed him as a potential replacement for Ten Hag.

“If Erik ten Hag leaves this summer, then I’d like Kieran McKenna to replace him,” he told Planet Sport Bet .

“A lot of people will want them to go for someone who has already proven themselves at a big club and he is yet to do that, but he’s learnt his trade the hard way and he’s the best option for them right now. They’ve had huge names before in Louis Van Gaal and Jose Mourinho, so why not give an opportunity to a young, up and coming coach who knows the club.

“He’ll work well under a sporting director and he’s definitely the manager I’d go for – even more so if they wait until Christmas to replace Ten Hag. Then McKenna will have the experience of half a Premier League campaign under his belt and they can see how he gets on.”
