A pair of familiar foes collide in the round of 16 of the Europa League.
SC Freiburg host West Ham United on Thursday for the first leg, after the teams were in both in Group A during the round-robin portion of the competition. The Hammers won each of their group stage meetings and are looking to defeat a single opponent three times in the same campaign for the first time.
To that end, West Ham have been inconsistent since the calendar changed over to 2024, as they've won twice, drawn four times and lost four times in that period. Encouragingly for the London side, their two wins came during their two most recent matches, so they'll hope that they've turned a corner after a rough couple of months.
As for Freiburg, their form hasn't been much better as they haven't won in the Bundesliga since Jan. 20. In the eight games since then (across all competitions), their lone victory came in the second leg of their Europa League knockout round playoff — which qualified them for this round.
While the German side have been struggling domestically, they'll hope that the UEL provides some respite to an otherwise unremarkable campaign.
