As Serie A nears the middle third of its 2020-21 campaign, it's become clear that there will be more challengers for the title than in recent history.
Juventus is the nine-time defending champion, and while the dynasty has been fun to watch it's also created predictability at the top of the Serie A table.
This season has flipped the script on that narrative, with the Bianconeri heading into Matchday 12 in fourth place and four points behind a resurgent A.C. Milan in the No. 1 spot. Milan has yet to lose a match in domestic play this season, and thus has been at or near the top of the standings from the get-go.
The Rossoneri are heavily favoured to maintain their grip on the top spot after their midweek matcup with Genoa, which is mired in 19th and looking like an odds-on favourite for relegation. Meanwhile, Juve has its hands full with Atalanta, which sits in eighth but has excelled in the Serie A and the Champions League in recent years.
Inter Milan, which heads into the midweek slate of games in second place (three points below its arch-rival), will face third-place Napoli on Wednesday in a crucial outing. Inter was within a single point of Juventus to end last season, so the Nerazzurri will be acutely aware of how important every result is — especially against a fellow contender.
