They're two of the biggest clubs in the world, and on the weekend they'll square off with first place in the Premier League on the line.
Liverpool and Manchester United each have trophy cases that would rival those of any team on Earth, making for a neverending debate among fans of England's top flight: which team is bigger?
It's a tough question to answer as there are many ways to define "biggest." However, what isn't up for debate is that they are currently occupying the top two spots in the Premier League, bringing the discussion right back into the public consciousness.
On a new episode of "Shoot-Out," hosts Steve Bower and Greg Brady wade into the discussion, with each expressing the utmost respect for both clubs.
With that in mind, Brady says Liverpool should be the current choice based on how much success the Reds have enjoyed over the past few season under Jurgen Klopp.
"Man United is a global brand and I think it's always going to be, and there's obviously teams that have stepped up and challenged that somewhat in the Premier League," Brady explained. "But if we're talking about a club and ... you've got to check one box as to the preferred club — Liverpool or Man United — right now, and it's not just popularity but exceptionality in the last few seasons, I think there's just the one, I really do. It doesn't mean Man United won't ascend to those heights again."
Shoot-Out: Should Chelsea fire Frank Lampard?
Both men agreed that success is cyclical, with United having won several titles during Alex Ferguson's tenure at Old Trafford. Liverpool has been winning more these days, but overall it's a close call.
"If you go on league titles, Manchester United's still one ahead, 20-19," Bower said. "If you go to major [European] honours, Liverpool are three ahead. If you include the Community Shield, Manchester United are two ahead. With the different generations they've both dominated."
There will never be a consensus, but Brady contends that United's current form — which has come as a surprise to many observers as United started the season in the doldrums and looked to be well behind the standard of the expected title challengers — should be enough to tilt things Liverpool's way.
"They can shock us all and win the Premier League this year, but that's the point, it would be a shock," Brady said of the Red Devils. "Think about that. It'd be a shock if Man United won the Premier League.
"You can't be the biggest club in England, and you can't be one of the three or four biggest clubs in Europe, if you're a surprise Premier League winner."
