When Tottenham Hotspur lines up at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, the team will be playing the role of massive underdog.
Spurs face Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final and squaring off against a club that has taken a stranglehold of the competition in recent years. City is the three-time defending Carabao Cup champion and has won five of the last seven editions of the tournament. Meanwhile, Spurs will take part in their first Carabao Cup final since losing to Chelsea in 2015, and they'll be looking to hoist the EFL Cup trophy for the first time since 2008.
Given the recent history of the respective teams in the competition and their relative standings in the Premier League, few are giving Tottenham much of a chance on Sunday.
That doesn't sit well with Son Heung-min.
The 28-year-old Spurs star expects his side to win the match, and he'll be sorely disappointed if he's not wearing a winners medal after the final whistle.
"Let's be honest, it's no proud moment [to simply play on Sunday]," Son told Spurs TV moments after scoring the winner in a 2-1 Premier League victory over Southampton on Wednesday. "I'm not happy with [just] playing [in the] final.
"I think fans can't say, if we go [to the] final and lose, they'll not say 'we are proud of you guys.'"
Son and the rest of the Tottenham organization have endured a turbulent few days, with Jose Mourinho having been sacked as manager on Monday and 29-year-old Ryan Mason stepping in as interim boss. On top of all that was the news of the formation of the European Super League, of which Tottenham was a part before abruptly pulling out alongside five other English clubs earlier this week.
With Spurs still on the outside looking in for a Champions League spot, the Carabao Cup looms as a potential focal point for success in a rollercoaster season on and off the pitch. Son feels that a victory on Sunday would mean a lot to the club's supporters after an emotional week.
"I think they really deserve it, more than anyone else, so I think we have to take care of our bodies, we have to rest well until Sunday — we've got a couple of days," Son said. "We have to rest well. We have to fight, then obviously we have to fight for us as well, but we have to fight for the fans."
He added: "I want to be a winner and be proud, not just playing for a final and proud."
