Sunday's Premier League match between Liverpool and defending champions Manchester City at Anfield was one which lived up to expectations.
It was a thrilling affair which saw City take the lead in the first half through John Stones, but the teams were back on level terms in the second half courtesy of an Alexis Mac Allister penalty.
Played amongst the backdrop of a passionate atmosphere, neither team was able to find a breakthrough when the final whistle was blown, however, there is one incident which remains a talking point.
In the dying seconds of the game, City winger Jeremy Doku challenged Mac Allister for an aerial ball, and while the Belgian did manage to make contact with the ball inside his own box, he did follow through with his foot hitting his Liverpool counterpart in the chest.
While there were calls for a Liverpool penalty, referee Michael Oliver did not point to the spot and this decision was not deemed a clear and obvious error by VAR.
Since the conclusion of the game, it has been a heated point of discussion for former players, and Steve McManaman is the latest to give his opinion on the incident.
"At the time, I thought Doku was rather fortunate but ultimately, I don’t believe it was a penalty," McManaman told Betfred.
"I didn’t think that Michael Oliver was going to give a penalty in the 97th minute. For it to be given, it would have had to have been like the penalty that Manchester City conceded earlier in the second-half where it was a definite penalty. There was no way that the game was going to be decided by a penalty in the 97th minute.
“I understand Jürgen Klopp’s reading of it, but I didn’t believe it was going to be given at all. If it was given and Liverpool won 2-1, then it would have all been about Michael Oliver on Monday morning rather than the game, which was the real winner because it was a really, really good game between two outstanding teams.”
Liverpool and City will not return to Premier League action until after the international break when they face Brighton and Arsenal respectively on March 31.
