South Africa kick off their second Women's World Cup on Sunday as they face perennial contenders Sweden.
Banyana Banyana made their WWC debut four years ago in France, losing all three matches and scoring just a single goal. They'll look to improve upon those stats in their second World Cup, and will be buoyed by their 2022 Africa Women's Cup Of Nations title, but their first match in this tournament is likely their toughest of the group stage as they face a Swedish side ranked third in the world.
The Swedes are coming off back-to-back top four finishes in major tournaments, having earned a silver medal in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and following that up with a semi-finals exit at Euro 2022. The team have consistently been among the best in the world but haven't won a major competition since the 1984 Euros.
With that motivation behind them, Sweden will look to make a statement against the inexperienced South Africans from the outset.
