The 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup round of 16 begins Friday with Switzerland facing Spain.
The Swiss topped Group A with a win and two draws, giving them a one-point advantage over groupmates Norway. While capturing first place in the group is an impressive feat, Switzerland's form could be a worry heading into this match as they drew their final two group-stage matches 0-0 and only scored in their opening game.
However, that's arguably less worrisome that the route that Spain took to get to this match. The Spanish routed Costa Rica (3-0) and Zambia (5-0) before being on the other end of a lopsided scoreline to finish the group stage, losing 4-0 to Japan in a game that determined the Group C winners.
If Spain, one of the pre-tournament favourites, play like that again, the Swiss will feel confident in their abilities to move on to the quarterfinals.
