One player will be unavailable this summer.

Teddy Sheringham is concerned by Gareth Southgate having to leave Harry Maguire out of England’s Euro 2024 squad.

The Manchester United central defender started the season stripped of the captaincy, and his future at Old Trafford looked hopeless after the club were willing to sell him to West Ham.

However, Maguire remained at the club and after injuries and form problems for most of United’s other defenders throughout the season, he emerged once again as a reliable option for Erik ten Hag.

Despite that, he was not called up to the Euros in Germany by Southgate, who had stuck by him for much of the previous season.

Speaking to TG Casino, former United striker Sheringham was worried by the absence, caused by a calf injury.

“Losing to Iceland ahead of the opening game with Serbia is a big concern,” he said. “Losing Harry Maguire to injury too, who’s been a stalwart for England over the years, is a big issue having played alongside John Stones in the middle of defence.

“I would be very concerned if I were England – you don’t just put a random four players in defence to play together, you need to work on them, and I’m sure that’s what Gareth Southgate will have done over the last period building up to the first game.

“It’s a tough call now, you can’t just think that because we’ve got a prominent front six that you can leave it all up to them, you’ve got to work on the defence as well.”
