Dominic Solanke could be the missing piece for Tottenham Hotspur this season, according to Teddy Sheringham.

Solanke joined Spurs earlier this month on a reported £55 million transfer from Bournemouth, with whom he scored 19 league goals last season. The 26-year-old stepped directly into Tottenham's starting XI, with Ange Postecoglou employing Solanke in the centre forward position between Brennan Johnson and club icon Son Heung-min in Spurs' first match of the campaign on Monday.

Sheringham, who starred for Tottenham for five seasons in the 1990s, believes the addition of Solanke is exactly what Postecoglou was missing at times last year, when the club finished fifth in the league after a hot start to the campaign.

"I’m really optimistic about Tottenham this season; incredibly optimistic," Sheringham told onlinepoker.ltd. "I hope that Dom Solanke catches fire very quickly and finishes off all the chances that Tottenham will create for him.

"Last season, Tottenham were having two, three or four chances in the first 10-15 minutes of games and they weren’t converting them. When you don’t take your chances in the Premier League, you make life difficult for yourself and you leave yourself with a mountain to climb.

"That happened a few times (last season), and all of a sudden you’re one or two down. I expect more of the same. I don’t think things will be more difficult for Ange, it should be easier.

"I hope they can get off to a flying start and stay up at the top end of the table for the majority of the Premier League season."
