'The reality is we are out' - Mikel Arteta laments Arsenal FA Cup exit

'The reality is we are out' - Mikel Arteta laments Arsenal FA Cup exitPA

Arsenal are out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle as they were defeated in a penalty shootout by visiting Manchester United on Sunday.

The teams battled to a 1-1 draw in the 90 minutes of regular play before neither side could find the net in the following half-hour of extra time. That meant penalties were required to decide a winner, and the Gunners' finishing woes came to the forefront as they were outduelled 5-3 by the Red Devils in the shootout.

It was a frustrating way to exit the competition for the North Londonhers, who dominated possession and created more than three times as many chances as their visitors. Arsenal even had a penalty saved inside regular time as Martin Odegaard was brilliantly denied by United goalkeeper Altay Bayındır to keep the teams on level terms.

Needless to say, Mikel Arteta expressed exasperation following the match.

"It's unbelievable," the Arsenal manager told the BBC. "Obviously, you measure the performance and what we did in relation to the position, you deserve to win the game by a mile.

"But the reality is we are out and [that's] the only thing that's going to be judged."

Despite the frustration, Arteta isn't laying the blame on the players. According to him, they did everything they could and would normally win under the same circumstances.

"I love my players," he said. "I love our team and I love how good they are and what they do because in 1000 games, you should lose one and probably it was this one.

"You have to understand this as well, it's part of our industry, our game and move on because you don't have time to do that because on Wednesday we have a massive one [against Tottenham]."
