Three former teams Jose Mourinho could manage after Roma sacking

Could he make it a hat-trick at Chelsea?

Jose Mourinho has been sacked by Roma on Tuesday with the club in ninth place in Serie A.

In some ways, it appears a typical Mourinho fallout, as he lobbied for more spending in the transfer market and had at times had problems with different players and staff at the club.

However, as usual when it comes to Mourinho, there was success, such as his triumph in the Europa Conference League to bring European silverware to Rome for the first time. Unfortunately for the manager and the club, they were unable to kick on, and they have parted ways.

After a difficult spell at Tottenham, there has been speculation that Mourinho will try international management next, having said he hopes to manage Portugal before retiring. But he also has received approaches from elsewhere recently, including Saudi Arabia.

While there is every chance of Mourinho taking a high-paying gig there, he has been willing to return to former clubs in the past, such as his return to Chelsea, which saw him win the league once more.

We look at three potential clubs who might want him back.

Chelsea

Could it be a hat-trick? Mauricio Pochettino has shown no signs of turning things around at Stamford Bridge, and Todd Boehly continued to spend heavily last summer. While Mourinho is an accomplished tactician he also makes regular demands of his club in the transfer window, and perhaps Boehly would be willing to indulge him.

After Graham Potter and Pochettino (so far) have failed to produce results while hoping for attractive football, perhaps Chelsea will sacrifice entertainment for some pragmatic football that gets results.

Man Utd

Mourinho gave United their best seasons since the retirement of Alex Ferguson. A second place finish, a League Cup and a Europa League triumph, before things got messy in the final season and he was replaced by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

With Erik ten Hag struggling, Jim Ratcliffe might soon lose patience and suggest the Dutchman is moved on. Having identified Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba as problems for United when he was there, he evidently has similar transfer misgivings as Ratcliffe - but would they agree on the solutions?

Porto

In third place and five points behind Sporting in the chase for the Liga Portugal standings, is Mourinho willing to return to the club he made his name?

It was there that he landed his first European titles, both the UEFA Cup and the Champions League, and where he earned his move to Chelsea. Whether he would risk his reputation by coming back and attempting to rebuild a side on reduced resources is open to question.
