The 2019-20 UEFA Champions League is back, and it'll look very different than originally planned.
Due to the global coronavirus pandemic and the shutdown that followed, UEFA had to drastically alter the look of the tournament — right down to the locations of the matches.
Gone are the two-legged knockout fixtures that usually lead up to the final. In their place is a straight knockout tournament to be held in one place, likely in front of zero spectators, as the world continues to take precautions against the spread of COVID-19.
From the quarterfinals through to the championship match, teams will be located in a central location in order to create a frantic, intense end to the competition that has never been seen before.
Here's everything you need to know about the return of the Champions League.
Where will the 2020 Champions League matches be played?
With some Round of 16 second leg matches still to be completed, UEFA announced that the remainder of that round's fixtures would take place in their originally scheduled venues. There are four such matches still to be played, and they've been scheduled for Aug. 7 and 8.
In the event that any of the remaining Round of 16 matches cannot be played in their original stadiums, venues in the Portuguese cities of Porto and Guimaraes would step in as hosts.
For the quarterfinals, semifinals and final, all games will be played in Lisbon. Sporting's Estadio Jose Alvalade and the Estadio da Luz (home of Benfica) will alternate hosting duties starting Aug. 12, culminating in the final.
The 65,000-seat Estadio da Luz has been chosen to host the championship match, taking over for the Ataturk Olympic Stadium (which will host the 2021 final after UEFA overhauled this year's competition). Known as "The Cathedral," The Estadio da Luz is Portugal's biggest stadium and has hosted the 2004 Euro final, the 2014 UEFA Champions League final and several Portuguese national team matches.
Which teams are in the 2020 Champions League?
Atalanta, Atletico Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and RB Leipzig have already cemented their spots in the quarterfinals, while Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Juventus, Lyon, Manchester City, Napoli and Real Madrid have the opportunity to join them after the Round of 16.
Of the teams that have yet to complete their second leg fixtures, Bayern has the best chance to advance as the German champion holds a 3-0 lead over Chelsea.
2020 Champions League schedule
The remaining second legs of the Round of 16 will take place Aug. 7 and 8 before the entire tournament moves to Portugal for the quarterfinals, semifinal and final starting Aug. 12 and ending Aug. 23.
