Before play was halted in mid-March due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, the Champions League had completed half of its Round of 16 ties. Four teams — Atalanta, PSG, RB Leipzig and Atletico Madrid — booked their tickets into the quarterfinals ahead of the pause in play, while the other four Round of 16 ties had seen the first legs completed.

The remaining second legs were contested on Aug. 7 and 8 in their original venues. Manchester City advanced by defeating Real Madrid, Bayern Munich beat Chelsea, Barcelona eliminated Napoli, and Lyon knocked out Juventus.

In the quarters, Lyon upset City and Leipzig ousted Atletico, while PSG required a dramatic comeback to advance past Atalanta. Additionally, Bayern dropped eight goals on a shellshocked Barca side.

In the semifinals, PSG and Bayern put an end to the fairy tale runs of RB Leipzig and Lyon, both winning by 3-0 scores.

That left us with a heavyweight championship match:

Where is the 2020 Champions League?

  • Championship match: Estadio da Luz, Lisbon, Portugal

The remainder of the competition has taken place in Lisbon, Portugal. Two venues have shared hosting duties from the quarterfinals onward, as the Estadio da Luz and Estadio Jose Alvalade have taken turns providing the setting as the biggest teams in Europe have battled for soccer supremacy.

Both venues are well-known to fans. The biggest stadium in Portugal, the 64,000-capacity Estadio da Luz is home to Primeira Liga giant Benfica, and it has hosted several high profile matches — including the Euro 2004 final and the 2014 Champions League final. The Estadio da Luz will host this year's deciding match.

Across town, Sporting Lisbon's home ground — the Estadio Jose Alvalade — is a cathedral of the game in its own right. The 50,000-seat stadium also hosted several Euro 2004 fixtures as well as the 2005 UEFA Cup final.
