The growing rivalry between neighbours United States and Canada continues on Sunday night in Nashville, Tenn.
After both sides earned draws to open their respective campaigns in the final round of CONCACAF's World Cup qualifying tournament, they now each look to pick up their first victory. The Americans battled to a scoreless draw in El Salvador on Thursday, a good-if-underwhelming result for the reigning Gold Cup and Nations League champions. Meanwhile, the Canadians had to erase a first-half deficit to earn their 1-1 draw with Honduras in Toronto, giving the team and its fans a feeling of lost opportunity.
Now, Canada aims for its first win against the USA on American soil since 1957 — John Herdman's side ended its 34-year winless run against the Americans in October 2019, but has lost the two most recent meetings between the nations. At the same time, the United States will be eagerly trying to avoid going winless in its opening two matches of the qualifying campaign.
With both sides seeing themselves as better than the results of their first matches, the latest meeting between the North American nations is shaping up to be a crucial one.
