The Spanish club claimed their first European title.

It took 11 rounds of penalties, but Villarreal won the Europa League final over Manchester United on Wednesday.

The match was a clash of styles as United held the lion's share of possession while Villarreal looked to counterattacks and set pieces to find joy. The Spanish side's strategy worked in the first half, as Gerard Moreno knocked in an in-swinging free kick in the 29th minute on his club's first shot on target, giving the Yellow Submarine a halftime lead.

United would respond through Edinson Cavani, who hit a clinical finish from close range early in the second half to equalize.

It was a war of wills from then on out, as the teams looked to outlast each other throughout a cagey affair. It resulted in a slow-paced, often sloppy match through the 90 minutes and then extra time.

However, the penalty shoot-out made up for it as every man that stepped up to the spot through the first ten rounds managed to bury their respective effort, leading to a goalkeeper vs. goalkeeper finale. Villarreal goalie Gerónimo Rulli calmy fired a rocket past counterpart David De Gea, putting all the pressure on the United 'keeper. De Gea's subsequent attempt was a weak one that was easily collected by Rulli, sending the Villarreal fans in attendance into raptures as the Yellow Submarine claimed their first-ever continental trophy.
