Liverpool had more than enough opportunities to overturn the first leg deficit but their usual killer instinct was absent as Real Madrid stood tall.

Liverpool were left to regret a series of missed opportunities as they exited the Champions League at the quarterfinal stage following a goalless draw with Real Madrid. Trailing 3-1 from the first leg, Liverpool, the masters of European football miracles, knew what they had to do but despite their best efforts, it’s the 13 times winners who will face Chelsea in the semifinal

Needing a solid start, Liverpool began the game brightly as Mohamed Salah and James Milner both forced excellent saves from Thibaut Courtois. The home side dominated the bulk of the first half and managed to get themselves into a number of great positions but their final ball combined with a lack of composure ensured they couldn’t make an early breakthrough.

For Madrid, Karim Benzema, a standout player in the first leg, almost broke the deadlock with Madrid’s only real attempt on goal as his weak shot managed to find the outside of the post. That was as good at is it got for the Spanish side, who failed to make any sort of impact in the first half as Liverpool overran them for large periods.

The second period saw Liverpool continue to batter the Madrid penalty area, but for all their efforts Real’s defence was prepared for whatever the likes of Salah, Sadio Mane, and Roberto Firmino had to throw at them. Liverpool’s quest for a seventh European Cup is over whilst Madrid will be fully focused on securing number 14.
