He revealed his ambitions.

Wayne Rooney believes managing Manchester United and not Everton would be the “pinnacle” of his management ambitions.

Rooney’s formative years were spent at Everton and he returned for a brief spell at Goodison Park after his time at Old Trafford came to a close.

He then went on for a spell in MLS with DC United before playing briefly for Derby County until he moved full-time into management.

He has recently been confirmed as the new manager with Championship side Plymouth Argyle after an ill-fated spell at Birmingham City.

Despite his best tenure coming at Derby County when he battled admirably against financial restraints, his sights remain high when it comes to his current career.

Speaking to Sky Bet, he explained that he would one day like to take over at United, though acknowledged the emotional aspect of managing Everton if the chance came his way.

He said: “It’s a tough one because I’ve always said that I’d love to manage Everton or Manchester United. I’d probably say United – that would be the pinnacle to manage Manchester United.

“Everton would be more from an emotional standpoint, a club I support and love, but United would be the pinnacle really.”
