It's been a grueling season for both teams involved, but the pinnacle of the campaign is finally here.
Tonight two of the most successful clubs in the history of the sport square off for continental supremacy as Liverpool and Real Madrid meet in France for the UEFA Champions League final.
Both teams are used to being in this position, as they both sit inside the top four for most UCL titles won. Of course, Real Madrid tops the list with 13 titles, but Liverpool would move into a tie for second with a victory today.
The Reds would also get a bit of revenge for the 2018 final, which Madrid claimed over Jurgen Klopp's men (although Liverpool did win it the next year). While Klopp denies any extra motivation to avenge the 2018 loss, he admits the 3-1 defeat is a bad memory.
"It is clear, this was a harsh night for us. It was really tough to take," the Liverpool manager said. "The circumstances, the way we conceded the goals, the injury of Mo [Salah] of course, a lot of things happened that night. We came there a little bit on three wheels if that makes sense."
Things are different now, with Liverpool already claiming the FA Cup and Carabao Cup and coming second in the Premier League less than a week ago. According to Klopp, the chance to add a UCL title to the mix is a special opportunity to make "a great season" even better.
"It would be, without the Champions League final, a great season. With the Champions League, winning the Champions League would be a fantastic season. It's as easy as that," he said. "There are still levels. That's absolutely fine. We don't think because we won two competitions now and were close in a third competition that we wouldn't care about that. That is, of course, not the case. You never know how often you will reach a Champions League final, so you better use the few opportunities you get. For us, it is now really special, the third time in the last five years. That is really special with this group."
