The Voyageurs Cup will be raised tonight.
The Vancouver Whitecaps and Toronto FC meet at BC Place to contest the 2022 Canadian Championship final. At stake is the domestic cup title as well as a berth in the 2023 CONCACAF Champions League, with both teams eager to represent Canada in the continental championship.
For visiting Toronto, tonight will actually be their second Canadian Championship final in under two months. Due to COVID-19, the 2020 edition experienced several delays and was actually contested in a one-match final between TFC and Canadian Premier League side Forge FC in Hamilton, Ont., on June 4 of this year. Toronto won that match, and, after losing the 2021 final away to CF Montreal last November, will now contest their third straight Canadian Championship final on the road.
Meanwhile, the Whitecaps are returning to the final for the first time since 2018. That edition was won by Toronto, as was the previous time the 'Caps made it to the final (2016) when TFC scored in stoppage time to snatch the cup away. In fact, four of Toronto's eight Canadian Championship titles have come with Vancouver finishing as runners-up.
Needless to say, the Whitecaps are highly motivated to finally slay their cup demons.
