William Gallas was unimpressed by three players as England beat Serbia at the weekend.

Gareth Southgate’s men were 1-0 winners on Sunday, and they had Jude Bellingham to thank for his 13th-minute winner.

The former Arsenal player noted that Declan Rice was the most impressive player for England, and was worried that a partly defensive player was the best on show.

He told Prime Casino : “I think Declan Rice stood out against Serbia. Rice was probably England’s best player in terms of his all-round performance. That says it all about the performance, when your best player is a defensive midfielder against Serbia.

“[Phil] Foden, [Bukayo] Saka and [Harry] Kane were quiet. They weren’t good enough – they didn’t do enough. I know that some of England’s big players are coming into the tournament after a long season, and it can be difficult to make your mark in the opening game of a tournament.

“The most important thing is to win the opening game, and sometimes players are scared to not lose the first game. That is what happened yesterday, and it contributed to England’s performance.

“For England, the victory will build confidence and the second game will be better because of it. I think England were a bit scared (to lose) against Serbia. Now they have the three points on the board, I expect them to look much better against Denmark.”
