William Gallas was a defensive master for Chelsea and Arsenal and the former French international still keeps an eye on his previous clubs.
Arsenal are many people’s tip to push Manchester City close this season for the Premier League title after falling short in 2022/23 but Gallas believes there’s a member of the Arsenal backline who could come under scrutiny this season.
Since signing for Arsenal, Ben White has earned plenty of plaudits in his attacking right back role and he was a key contributor in some of Arsenal’s biggest performances last year.
Despite many promising performances, Gallas isn't fully convinced by White and believes Arsenal should jump back into the transfer marker for a right back.
“I am still convinced that Arsenal need another right-back. I know fans are not happy when I say that, but for me, Ben White is not a right-back, he is a centre back,” said Gallas when speaking to Genting Casino.
“He had a great season last year, but they still need a right-back who knows the position well. I know what I am talking about because I played at centre back and right-back.
“When Ben White plays there, he does his job well, but when they play against the bigger teams, he does not have the quality to support in attack and give Saka what he needs.”
Gallas added, “I therefore think they should look for a right-back. Timber has also just done his ACL so they will need more cover at full back.”
