The Canadian was toppled at the first hurdle in Illinois.

Bianca Andreescu's struggles continued as she was bounced from the Chicago Fall Tennis Classic in straight sets on Wednesday.

The 21-year-old Canadian was making her return to the court after being eliminated in the round of 16 of the U.S. Open earlier this month, and she had hoped to have a long run at the Illinois tournament.

Instead, she was taken down at the first hurdle. Facing World No. 43 Shelby Rogers for the first time, Andreescu looked rusty after being given a bye into the round of 32 of the competition.

The Mississauga, Ont., native struggled with her serve, committing four double-faults to Rogers' one. While she wasn't on top of her service game, Andreescu really found difficulty in her returns. The Canuck only managed to convert one break point over the course of the match — during a pivotal first-set game she failed to convert five break points and ultimately handed momentum to her American opponent.

Down a set, Andreescu increased her level in the second set and forced Rogers to match her intensity. This led to some inspired play from both women, with Andreescu showing sparks of life as the match wore on.

Ultimately, Andreescu didn't have enough to overcome her in-form opponent as Rogers added another big name to the list of women's she beaten recently — a list that includes World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty in the U.S. Open.

Up next for Andreescu is Indian Wells, where she won her first WTA title in 2019.
