The Italian Open is down to the final four as Elena Rybakina, Jelena Ostapenko, Veronika Kudermetova and Anhelina Kalinina make up the field for the semifinals.
Rybakina is the highest-ranked player remaining in the tournament after she defeated world No. 1 Iga Swiatek in the quaterfinals. Swiatek retired from that match in the third set due to a thigh injury, but that doesn't take away from the fact that Rybakina had been going toe-to-toe with the top-ranked player on the circuit up to that point.
As such, the 23-year-old Kazakhstani should be considered the favourite to win the Rome tournament.
