Leylah Annie Fernandez has had a year to forget — on the singles side, at least.
The 20-year-old has become a force to be reckoned with in doubles, ranked No. 21 in the world and climbing. Fernandez had reached even higher peaks on the singles side, topping out at 13th in August of 2022.
But since then it's been a freefall as inconsistency has plagued the Montreal native, and she entered the Bad Homburg Open ranked 96th in the world.
Fernandez's attempt to climb back up to the upper echelons of women's tennis will require incremental improvements, and a strong run on the grass courts in Bad Homburg could bode well ahead of Wimbledon next week.
