The one and only time Bianca Andreescu faced Garbine Muguruza, it was in the midst of Andreescu's initial rise to the top of the tennis world.
On Monday, the women will meet again with Andreescu looking to replicate their first encounter.
The 20-year-old Canadian last faced off with Muguruza in the quarterfinals of Indian Wells in 2019, which is better known as Andreescu's breakout tournament. The Mississauga, Ont., native swept aside the Spaniard in straight sets while only losing a single game. The youngster would famously go on to win the Indian Wells crown, followed later in the year by Rogers Cup and U.S. Open titles.
Of course, things have changed for Andreescu in the time since as the World No. 9 missed out on the entirety of 2020 through injury. The Miami Open is only her second tournament the year, and while she has shown flashes of the dominance that defined her breakout season, Andreescu is clearly not back to that form just yet.
Mugunza, ranked 13th in the world, will be eager to earn a little bit of revenge on Monday while also slowing Andreescu's road back to the top of women's tennis.
