The second-round encounter between Bianca Andreescu and Tereza Martincova at the 2021 Miami Open appears to be a massive mismatch at first glance. Still, the 105th-ranked Martincova heads into Friday's match with something that World No. 9 Andreescu doesn't currently have: momentum.
Martincova earned the right to take on the 2019 U.S. Open champion by virtue of winning a pair of qualifiers before defeating Kazakhstan's Yaroslava Shvedova in the first round on Wednesday. The 26-year-old Prague native is on a roll and is already participating in her seventh tournament of the year.
Contrast that with Andreescu's recent activity, which was limited to a run to the semi-final at the Phillip Island Trophy after a second-round exit at the Australian Open. Prior to that, the 20-year-old Canadian's last action was back at the end of 2019, when she had to retire due to injury in the WTA Finals group stage.
While no one would dare say that Martincova matches Andreescu's mercurial talent, given their respective roads to Miami, it wouldn't be unexpected for the underdog to give the favorite a real run for her money.
